Today, Circle Economy launch the report "Circular jobs and skills in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area", the world's first regional deep-dive to explore the character of jobs and skills in the circular economy. Additionally, it provides practical actions for urban policymakers that to boost the development of a future-proof and circular workforce. The report was produced by Circle Economy and Erasmus University Rotterdam for the City of Amsterdam and Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. The Board actively supported the development as steering committee member.

Organic waste: the start of something beautiful

Vegetable, fruit and garden waste is more than just compost, as the resource and energy company Meerlanden demonstrates at its Green Energy Factory (Groene Energiefabriek) in Rijsenhout, just south of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Meerlanden uses the organic waste from nine municipalities and 4,000 companies in the region to produce green gas, CO2, heat, compost, citrus fuel and water.

On December 4, the Mayors of over 40 cities were invited at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels to discuss the digital transformation. They are all part of the Digital Cities Challenge, an initiative of the European Commission to help European cities develop and implement policies that focus on smart, sustainable growth through the uptake of advanced technologies by local stakeholders, through building up local innovation ecosystems. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is one of the 6 Mentor Cities of this challenge, based on the region’s track record in the digital economy and the application of digital, data and smart cities innovations.

In Zaanstad, an important step has been taken to close the loop in textile manufacturing by tackling the growing mountain of waste produced by what is currently one of the most polluting industries. Wieland Textiles, Brightloops|Loop.a life, Leger des Heils ReShare and the Municipality of Zaanstad signed a partnership agreement on Friday, 23 November as a first move towards establishing the Dutch Center for Circular Textiles (DCCT). Its aim is to connect municipalities and companies throughout the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA), from all links in the textiles chain: from the collection of used textiles to the production of new ones.
