These were the topics of the second Amsterdam Life Sciences cafe, organised by the Amsterdam Economic Board and EY.
Medical professionals, data scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers and others came together on 19 September for the second meetup of the Amsterdam Medical Data Science Group to discuss how medical data can be used to benefit patients and improve medical practices.
E-waste is any kind of discarded equipment with a plug or battery – also known as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Resource and energy companies Meerlanden and AEB Amsterdam collect and sort e-waste respectively at their Regional Sorting Centre near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Recycle Service Centre in Amsterdam Westpoort, where equipment is also disassembled. The Board has been an important stimulus for these pioneers to start expanding and constructing their sorting centres. The more effectively equipment is sorted and disassembled, the cleaner the materials are, and the better they can be recycled.
Amsterdam is one of the frontrunners when it comes to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Combining AI with medical data science has been on the rise for a while and is poised to revolutionize the medical domain. AI offers a range of effective and innovative solutions to medical problems. However, there is still a gap to bridge between health professionals and data scientists.

In the Netherlands, around a million tons of grass per year is mowed from road verges, and the clippings can be very valuable. On the Board’s initiative, the Port of Amsterdam, biobased resource company NewFoss, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Province of Noord-Holland and the Zuiderzeeland Regional Water Authority are collaborating on the intelligent use of grass clippings in the project GrassBloxxx. How much grass is processed, and what is the output?
The European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society has selected Make IT Work, the retraining project of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, as the model project for teaching digital skills. This was announced in June at the Digital Assembly Event in Sofia, Bulgaria.
