Bloom without growing. Could that be in fashion?

The current economic model runs into numerous limits. Growth no longer appears to be infinitely applicable. How do we make choices in what can still grow and what can no longer grow? Is there any other way? Do we dare and can we let go of fundamental assumptions and learn to think around them? Can we explore together how to flourish without growing in textile and fashion land?

Amsterdam Economic Board organises a ‘learning journey’ about successful entrepreneurship in the fashion industry of the future. With, for and by key players in the textile industry. You, that is! That’s why we invite you, along with other leaders, to explore what happens when we let go of ‘growth thinking’. We are going to discover how to do things differently. How can we be and remain successful without sacrificing the planet and its inhabitants? After all, those residents are ourselves.

What it delivers

  • Insights based on the following questions:
    • Is growth actually necessary to be profitable?
    • How can we tinker with business models and dare to give new meaning to ‘profit’?
    • Can we ascribe new values to clothing?
  • What experiments or pilots can we design and actually do to test assumptions?
  • What are we running into, what can we solve individually but also what do we need to put on the agenda at other tables?

  • Welcome by Claire Teurlings, Circular Lead Amsterdam Economic Board
  • An introduction to post-growth and steering for behavior change by Paul Schenderling, Economist, Writer and Speaker
  • Introduction: who are you? What brings you here?
  • Strategies for a paradigm shift and scientific ‘proof’ by Irene Maldini, fashion industry sustainability researcher.
  • Break
  • Deep dive in subgroups led by Esther de Haan, director Amsterdam Transition Institute
  • Gallery walk past first collaborative concepts
  • Next steps with look ahead to next sessions

More information

The journey consists of a series of four meetings in which everyone gains knowledge, brings knowledge and rolls out wiser – and therefore richer. This will be followed by a celebration where you can also invite colleagues and acquaintances. And we hope to do it all before the end of the year. The kick-off is on September 27th. For the other days there are several options that can be agreed upon:

  • October 16 or 17 (two hours)
  • November 7 or 8 (two hours) and
  • November 27 or 29 (half-day). The latter is also the conclusion.

In addition, we will provide reading material and you may find yourself working between meetings to figure something out. It is difficult to give an estimate of time commitment beyond thus the four half-days for the working meetings.
